Each teacher in our building received an iPad on the last day of school. It looks like we'll also be getting a class set to share as a grade level next year (yay!). My husband has an iPad that he uses for med school, but I hadn't paid much attention to it. Now that I have my own that has all changed. I am so excited to have one! I've been digging around for educational aps for it. I started with the free ones (of course, haha), but I don't mind paying for them if they are worth it. That's where you come in... If you have an iPad, please leave your app recommendations in the comments here. I'll compile them and post them all in one place later this summer. I am fairly new to the IPAD also and I have been using it with a Kindergarten student, so most of my apps so far are preschool and Kindegarten apps, but I have found a few that you could probably use. Before I say those though, you should follow 1+1+1=1 on facebook! She frequently posts about apps that are free for a certain period of time. I learned from her about a lot of McGraw Hill Math apps being free and was able to download those. A day or 2 ago, I got ButterflyHD which is a great one, if your class studies Butterlies. I've heard Teacher Asst. Lite is really good for classroom teachers. I love Educreations (It is free). It is an interactive white board that you can record your presentation on or just use as a white board when teaching. Splash Math has free samples but then the rest you have to buy. I just downloaded the samples and I haven't had a lot of time to look at them, but they are supposed to be linked to Common Core Standards!! I hope that helps! If you follow blogs through Google Reader, make sure you download FeeddlerRSS. It is a great way to follow your blogs all in one place. Zite is a good app to help you follow news and articles on things that you like. Hope this helps! I'd be happy to share more as I get them!

ReplyDeleteI have iPods in my class, not iPads, but many of the apps are the same. For K-2 levels I like Super Why, Meet the Letters, Math Bingo, Word Bingo, Cash Cow, Same Sounds Spellbound, Teacher Created Materials Sight Words, BrainPop (I don't have a subscription, kids just watch the video of the day), Starfall ABCs, and any free books I can find on iBooks (Axel the truck, Garbage Monster Burp, Yellow Submarine, Digger the Dinosaur, Huff and Puff). StoryKit is another awesome app where kids can publish their writing by typing, drawing, and even narrating! So fun!

The frames are great... I have ideas already how to use them :) A few good apps that I have seen are ones by Everyday Mathematics. If you watch, they occasionally are free at itunes. But, even if not, they are fun games for kids to play.

Well like you, we got I-pads here at the end of the year and as I search for all the apps I can keep track of, my favorite for my 1st grade classroom is "My Spelling Test." I tested it with the kids last week for our last spelling test of the year. You type in your list and speak the word into it at the same time. The test is made for them and speaks the word for them to type in at their own pace. It gives immediate feedback and overall feedback at the end. You can have all your lists stored and it can be used for practice during the week or a mid-week check-in. I even got to use it for a quick review Monday morning (when child was absent Friday) before they had to take the test. There is a freebie app which allows you to make only one test.

ReplyDeleteI recommend Pick Stick on the IPad. It randomly selects students for questions and can even be set up to provide you question starters for each child based on the level of Bloom's Taxonomy that you set for them. I also like Teach Me Kindergarten, Montesorri Words, PhotoTouch sight words and Touch Write.

Smedley's Smorgasboard of Kindergarten
Doceri remote (use with Doceri Desktop that you have to download on your computer- there is a free trial period for this!) allows you to interact with whatever you have on your computer and gives you the mechanisms to project that to screen so that it becomes interactive. For those without Smartboards or Prometheans, this is a great solution without the extra hardware! The ability to walk around the room, observing students' work, allowing them to use the iPad to interact with what is on the computer (and the screen), sharing with all students at one time through the full class projection is PRICELESS!!! My students truly love it and I love that I can use ANYTHING on my computer (worksheets, math manipulatives programs, Smart Notebook files that I can download to my computer, ANYTHING), project it onto screen and use it to teach, and students can use that information to learn! :-)

ReplyDeleteMy kids love to go to the San Diego zoo webcams to watch the panda, orangutan, polar bears and any other that they ran domly add. We also check out google earth and look at things like the Hoover dam, mackinac bridge, Disney world. Etc.
